Why US education lags behind

TAFE teachers and students rallied outside Premier Baillieu's offices on Thursday May 10 in Melbourne in response to the drastic cuts to funding the TAFE education system in Victoria in the State Budget. An NTEU official estimated about 2500 people attended. Education union officials from the Australian Education Union (AEU) and National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) spoke on the extent and likely impact of the funding cuts on TAFE jobs, course fees, and the destruction of the TAFE Vocational Education programs. TAFE Teachers and students also addressed the crowd.






The US is being warned that its school system is lagging behind other countries. But with two weeks left until the presidential election, the campaigns have been largely silent on education. Al Jazeera's John Hendren reports from Chicago on why so many American students are being left behind.
